How to Make Vegan Gravy
Creamy Vegan Gravy (Powered by BareOrganics Sea Moss)
If holiday comfort food had a supporting actor that deserved top billing, it would be gravy. Rich, savory, silky gravy. And this version? Entirely vegan, deeply flavorful, and naturally thickened—thanks to our favorite ocean-grown secret weapon: BareOrganics Sea Moss Powder.
Sea moss is a natural vegan thickener, which means no gums, no weird additives, and no compromise on texture. It creates that classic, glossy gravy finish that hugs mashed potatoes, roasted veggies, and holiday mains like it was born for the job.
This gravy is easy enough for weeknights but elegant enough for your most important holiday table.
Why Sea Moss Works So Well in Gravy
Sea moss has natural gelling properties, which makes it ideal for sauces and gravies that need body without heaviness. Unlike cornstarch or excessive flour, it thickens smoothly and evenly—no lumps, no gluey texture, no stress.
Using BareOrganics Sea Moss Powder also adds trace minerals while keeping this recipe:
- Vegan
- Plant-based
- Clean-label
- Holiday-approved
Serving Suggestions
- Spoon generously over mashed potatoes
- Drizzle on roasted vegetables
- Pair with vegan loafs or holiday mains
- Use as a sauce base for shepherd’s pie or pot pie
Pro Tip
If you like your gravy extra luscious, let it rest for 2–3 minutes before serving. Sea moss continues to gently thicken as it cools—giving you that restaurant-quality finish without lifting a finger.

And yes—this gravy absolutely counts.

Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons vegan butter
- 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
- 1 onion, peeled and roughly chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, peeled and roughly crushed
- 4 tablespoons plain white flour
- 700 ml mushroom stock or vegetable stock
- 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 scoop BareOrganics Sea Moss Powder
Directions
- Build the base: Place a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the vegan butter and vegetable oil. Once melted, add the chopped onion. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring often, until the onion is soft and starting to brown.
- Layer in flavor: Add the garlic and bay leaves. Cook for another 2 minutes, stirring frequently to avoid burning.
- Create the roux: Sprinkle in the flour and stir until all the onion pieces are evenly coated. Add about 100 ml of the stock and stir continuously until a thick paste forms.
- Slowly add stock: Gradually add the remaining stock, a little at a time, stirring constantly to keep the gravy smooth and lump-free.
- Thicken naturally: Reduce the heat to low and stir in 1 scoop BareOrganics Sea Moss Powder. Simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring continuously, until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
- Season and finish: Add the dark soy sauce, then season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Strain and serve: Remove from heat and pass the gravy through a sieve for an ultra-smooth finish. Serve immediately, or keep warm over very low heat, stirring occasionally.
